‘He’ll die in jail’: Seven former captains seek Australian government’s intervention over Imran Khan's health

A coalition of seven celebrated former Australian cricket captains has petitioned Foreign Minister Penny Wong to step in diplomatically regarding the custody of Imran Khan, who remains incarcerated at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail. Organized by Greg Chappell—an 87-Test veteran and former India head coach who is seeking a direct meeting with Wong—the appeal includes Allan Border, Ian Chappell, Belinda Clark, Kim Hughes, Mark Taylor, and Steve Waugh.

Fearing that the 1992 World Cup-winning captain could perish behind bars, the signatories noted a severe decline since Greg Chappell observed him in good health as prime minister in 2022. They emphasized their deep respect for Khan's sporting achievements, national leadership, and establishment of cancer hospitals.

In their joint correspondence, the cricketing legends clarified that they hold no stance on Khan's domestic legal proceedings, framing their plea strictly as a defense of basic human dignity. They pointed to urgent warnings from Khan's sons and sisters concerning harsh conditions, including minimal legal consultations, restricted family visits, and inadequate medical attention.
