‘Franchise cricket isn’t as rewarding’: Jonathan Trott on Lions pride and England ambitions

Jonathan Trott, the former England Test batsman and current Afghanistan coach, is bringing his tactical expertise to the Lions squad as they prepare for an international tour. Trott’s own cricketing journey began with a modest Twenty20 debut in 2007, where he scored just nine and two in a series against the West Indies—a far cry from the iconic century he would later carve out on his Test debut at the Oval in 2009, a moment that cemented his place in Ashes history.

Now, as he guides the Lions, Trott emphasizes adaptability and smart decision-making, drawing on his own experiences of stepping into unfamiliar roles and environments. His leadership approach contrasts sharply with his early struggles, where limited familiarity with teammates and high-pressure conditions tested his abilities before he found his footing in international cricket.
