'Every graphic I see reminds me of that:' How James Madison became college football's new cradle of coaches

James Madison University is gaining a reputation as a premier incubator for head coaching talent, drawing comparisons to Miami University's historic status. The trend gained momentum when former athletic director Jeff Bourne observed the tactical preparation of Curt Cignetti during a 2017 upset loss to Elon at Bridgeforth Stadium, leading to Cignetti's hiring shortly thereafter.

Currently, three former Dukes coaches are leading undefeated programs in the 2026 season, with Curt Cignetti at Indiana, Bob Chesney at UCLA, and Billy Napier at James Madison all maintaining a combined 17-0 record. Despite significant roster turnover involving over 90 players transferring since late 2023, the institution continues to produce successful leaders who excel at the highest levels of college football.
