Despite an ambitious offseason aimed at bolstering their defense, the Dallas Cowboys stumbled out of the gate in a 28-20 opening-week loss to the New York Giants. Under new coordinator Christian Parker, Dallas revamped its roster by drafting rookies Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence, extending Quinnen Williams, and signing veterans Rashan Gary, Dee Winters, Cobie Durant, and Jalen Thompson.
Yet the group produced a league-worst 39.7 percent defensive success rate on Sunday, well below the previous season's floor of 50.1 percent, while generating the 21st-best pressure rate even with the seventh-highest blitz frequency.
New York took full advantage, dominating possession for 36 minutes and 40 seconds behind quarterback Jaxson Dart, who threw for 230 yards and three scores on 23-of-29 passing with zero turnovers. Isaiah Likely tallied 78 yards and two touchdowns on six receptions, while Malik Nabers contributed six grabs for 69 yards in his first action in nearly a calendar year.
The Giants converted nine of 11 third downs, establishing their highest success mark since 1978 and surrendering merely a single yard across two sacks. Following the defeat, Brian Schottenheimer remarked that Dallas was thoroughly outmuscled and delivered a subpar performance, noting that the team was humbled after falling well short of its competitive standards.
