Colorado head coach Deion Sanders and quarterback Julian Lewis have experienced a strained dynamic after the young signal-caller lost his primary role and saw his game participation decline. According to veteran observer Brian Howell, the tension stems from the exceptionally high bar established by Sanders over a decade of coaching his eldest son, Shedeur, which subsequent quarterbacks like Lewis and Kaidon Salter struggled to match.
Howell also noted that both parties might have felt cornered by a substantial name, image, and likeness financial agreement heading into the current campaign.
Lewis initially flashed significant potential for the Buffaloes, highlighted by a dominant performance against Weber State where he connected on 17 of 23 throws for 366 yards and four touchdowns in a 52-21 victory. However, as the schedule advanced, the team offensive unit faltered, and the passer failed to sustain his early productivity.
Across four total appearances this season, he managed 61 completions out of 95 attempted passes before his playing time diminished.
