The Big Ten’s officiating controversies are escalating, with Illinois head coach Bret Bielema adding his voice to the growing debate after a series of questionable calls in his team’s 38-37 win over Michigan State. Bielema, who earns approximately $7 million annually, criticized a disputed pass-interference no-call in the Alabama-Georgia game and a baffling reversal on an onside kick attempt in his own matchup.
Trailing 31-24 with under eight minutes left, Michigan State’s Samson Gash appeared to recover a surprise onside kick, only for officials to initially rule him out of bounds—before abruptly reversing the call and confirming the recovery. However, the offside penalty on Gash, who was reportedly half a yard behind the kicker when the ball was struck, remained in place, costing the Spartans a critical opportunity to tie the game.
Bielema’s frustration peaked when he argued that officials had missed a holding call in Indiana’s loss to Nebraska, further fueling concerns about consistency in Big Ten officiating decisions.
