Washington State’s season-long quest for a Pac-12 win took another hit as the Cougars fell 48-30 to Oregon State on Sunday, extending their conference losing streak to three games. The Cougars’ offense, led by freshman quarterback Owen Eshelman, struggled early with three consecutive three-and-out drives, including a costly decision to punt on 4th-and-1 instead of going for it.
Eshelman’s collegiate debut included a dropped pass on his first career attempt and a 90-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Legree that widened OSU’s lead to 14-0 after just one quarter. The Cougars’ defense held Oregon State to a single touchdown in the first half, but the Beavers’ explosive offense proved too much, with AJ Newberry and Jake Reichle combining for early scoring plays.
WSU’s offense showed flashes of promise with a 10-yard run by Eshelman and an 8-yard completion to Daniel Blood, but inconsistency and poor field position decisions ultimately doomed their comeback bid. The loss drops the Cougars to 1-6 on the season and 0-3 in Pac-12 play, while Oregon State remains undefeated in conference action at 3-0.
