UCLA’s undefeated season took a major hit after starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava suffered a season-ending knee injury in last week’s win over Oregon. The five-star recruit went down late in the second quarter after a tackle by Oregon’s Bear Alexander and Jerry Mixon, forcing him out of the game with his leg visibly twisted.
Though he returned briefly for one final play—a pick-six—he did not re-enter the contest, leaving the Bruins without their top offensive weapon as they prepare for a critical showdown against Wisconsin this Saturday. Iamaleava’s absence is a significant blow, as his dual-threat ability (982 passing yards, 144 rushing yards, and five total touchdowns this season) has been a cornerstone of UCLA’s high-powered offense under head coach Bob Chesney.
With Iamaleava out indefinitely, UCLA must turn to backup options, including Cal Poly transfer Ty Dieffenbach, who stepped in for the injured starter against Oregon. Dieffenbach completed three of six passes for 43 yards and a touchdown in limited action, earning Chesney’s nod to start against Wisconsin.
The younger Iamaleava brother, Madden, also remains in the mix as a potential replacement, though the Bruins’ depth chart will need to adapt quickly to maintain their 5-0 record and postseason aspirations.
