Brock Purdy arrives at Lumen Field operating at an unprecedented level of execution, yet the question hovering over his campaign is whether that standard survives against the defense built to derail it. The San Francisco signal-caller sits at the center of the league MVP conversation through four weeks of the 2026 season.
Now facing his 50th career start against a 3-1 Seattle Seahawks team, Purdy must prove his gaudy production can overcome a depleted offensive supporting cast.
The foundation of Purdy's case is unmatched statistical control. Guiding the 49ers to a 4-0 mark, he has completed 69.9 percent of his throws for 1,007 yards, 11 touchdowns, and a single interception, alongside 122 yards and one score on the ground.
Remarkably, Purdy has not been sacked once in 2026, making him the first quarterback in NFL history to start a season 4-0 with one or fewer combined sacks, fumbles, and interceptions. His 0.53 expected points added per dropback represents the best four-game opening stretch since Tom Brady recorded 0.59 in 2007.
Purdy also sets the league pace in passer rating at 126.2 and passing success rate at 61.9 percent, backing up his top ranking on NFL.com's Week 5 QB Index and ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell naming him the first-quarter MVP.
The counterweight to this brilliance is Mike Macdonald's proven record against Kyle Shanahan's offense. Macdonald has built a 3-2 career edge over Shanahan since taking over Seattle in 2024, holding San Francisco to three points in a 13-3 Week 18 loss that secured the NFC West for the Seahawks, followed by a 41-6 blowout in the January 2026 divisional round.
Seattle's defense currently allows a league-low 4.0 yards per play, directly confronting a 49ers attack averaging an NFL-best 6.8 yards per snap. Macdonald publicly praised Purdy's athleticism and playmaking when downs extend, but Seattle has consistently disrupted Shanahan's timing in prior meetings.
Skeptics who attribute Purdy's success purely to Shanahan's ecosystem must now evaluate him with that ecosystem stripped bare. The 49ers travel to Seattle missing starting fullback Kyle Juszczyk, while wideouts Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson, and Christian Kirk all sit on injured reserve.
Rob Gronkowski argued on *Up & Adams* that Purdy should be the favorite and No. 1 among quarterbacks, ahead of Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen.
Betting markets still place Purdy second in DraftKings NFL MVP odds at +330 behind Allen's +270.
