Get startedThe future of LIV Golf hinges on a pivotal October deadline, according to the league’s attorney, who told a New Jersey bankruptcy court that a decision on whether the Saudi-backed tour will continue into 2027—or dissolve entirely—will be finalized by month’s end. The league’s restructuring efforts took a major step forward Wednesday when U.S.
Bankruptcy Judge Michael B. Kaplan approved the termination of 19 player contracts, including those of high-profile names like Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, and Cam Smith.
LIV Golf argued the existing deals no longer align with its proposed compensation structure for a revamped league, though it remains unclear whether those players will rejoin LIV Golf or pursue alternatives like the PGA Tour or DP World Tour. The financial outlook for LIV Golf has darkened further after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund withdrew its backing earlier this year, despite having invested over $5 billion in the venture.
The league has since secured a $300 million lifeline from BC Partners, contingent on meeting specific conditions, but its ability to retain top talent remains a critical challenge. Several major stars, including Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia, David Puig, and Abraham Ancer, have already opted out, while Patrick Reed left in January to rebuild his PGA Tour status through the DP World Tour.
LIV Golf’s attorney also criticized the DP World Tour’s decision to enforce an all-or-nothing policy for 2027, banning players from competing in both leagues—a move the attorney called a potential interference with LIV’s restructuring and player freedom, the cornerstone of its original mission.
