SAN FRANCISCO -- NFL Week 5 delivered major storylines as wide receiver Mike Evans proved to be a perfect fit for quarterback Brock Purdy, head coach Kyle Shanahan, and the San Francisco 49ers, while Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen secured a milestone victory.
The 49ers defeated the Seattle Seahawks by a score of 32-29. In that game, Evans recorded seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown.
He also caught a critical two-point conversion that gave San Francisco a 29-26 advantage with 11:02 remaining in the contest. Reflecting on the performance of his new receiver, Shanahan stated, "That's exactly why he's here."
The matchup also featured a notable exchange involving Evans and Seahawks defensive back Diggs. Following the 32-29 victory, Evans explained what transpired between them on the field: "I was blocking him to the whistle, and then he said something like, I’m ‘doing extra,’ or something like that.
And I didn’t know that was him at first, because I played against him a few times, and we always been cool. He was a good player.
And I honestly didn’t know it was him because in the helmet, it’s hard to tell sometimes. And we were talking trash, and I think I pushed him, and then I was like, ‘Who are you?’ I looked to make sure, ‘Oh, it’s fucking Diggs.’ And then he mushed me.
It should have been a penalty [on Diggs]. It is what it is."
Addressing the interaction, Trent Williams offered his perspective on his teammate's playing style. Via Matt Lively of CBS Sports Bay Area, Williams noted, "It’s pretty funny.
That’s what it says. Mike plays with an edge.
He plays with a huge edge, something you wouldn’t expect a receiver to have. But that was pretty funny."
Elsewhere in Week 5, the Buffalo Bills improved to a 4-1 record by defeating the Los Angeles Rams 38-35 in an overtime thriller on Monday night in Los Angeles. The victory marked the 100th career win for Bills quarterback Josh Allen, as well as his first career win in an overtime game.
Allen showcased his dual-threat abilities throughout the contest, finishing the night with 121 rushing yards.
With this accomplishment, Allen became just the fourth quarterback to reach 100 victories in his ninth season. He joins an elite group that includes Patrick Mahomes, who accumulated 112 wins in that timeframe, Russell Wilson with 107 wins, and Tom Brady with 101 wins.
