Josh Heupel’s Tennessee Volunteers delivered a statement win over the sixth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday, securing a 26-10 victory that bolsters their College Football Playoff aspirations. The Volunteers, now 6-1 on the season, dominated the second half after Alabama’s lone scoring came in the first quarter.
Quarterback George MacIntyre managed 21-of-31 passing for 197 yards despite an interception, while running back DeSean Bishop led Tennessee’s ground game with 159 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries. The win marks Tennessee’s sixth victory of the year, including a key SEC conference win over a top-ranked opponent, and solidifies their bowl eligibility.
The Volunteers will look to maintain their momentum in their next matchup against South Carolina on October 24.
Heupel, in his sixth season as Tennessee’s head coach, celebrated the victory with his team, who took full control after trailing 10-12 early. Alabama’s offense struggled to sustain momentum, scoring all its points in the second quarter, while Tennessee’s defense stifled the Crimson Tide’s high-powered attack.
Wide receiver Mike Matthews led the receiving corps with seven catches for 85 yards, contributing to Tennessee’s offensive efficiency. The Volunteers’ impressive performance against Alabama strengthens their case for a playoff berth and sets the stage for a competitive SEC East race.
