During the opening match of the five-game T20I series on Thursday at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, Indian opener Abhishek Sharma committed a costly fielding error. In the eleventh over, fast bowler Mayank Yadav induced a mistimed aerial shot from Daryl Mitchell, but Sharma failed to secure the straightforward catch at long-on while Mitchell was on sixteen runs.
Although the missed opportunity denied Yadav his second wicket of the contest, the reprieve did not prove overly costly for the visitors. Arshdeep Singh ultimately removed Mitchell later in the innings after the batter had contributed twenty-eight runs, while fans online compared Sharma's lapse to similar fielding troubles faced by Babar Azam.
