The Calgary Flames fell short in a 7-3 defeat to the Colorado Avalanche at the Scotiabank Saddledome, despite flashes of resilience from their lineup. The game saw the return of former Flame Nazem Kadri and hometown hero Cale Makar, who combined for five points.
Makar, raised in Calgary, scored twice and added an assist, while Devon Toews and Nathan MacKinnon each chipped in with goals to extend Colorado’s lead. Calgary’s defense struggled early, with Cooley in net unable to contain the Avalanche’s offensive surge, including a key goal from MacKinnon midway through the second period.
The Flames’ only bright spots came from Adam Klapka’s first goal of the season and a late rally by Mikael Backlund and Kevin Bahl, who cut the deficit to four before the Avalanche sealed the win. The night also marked the NHL debut of Jonathan Costagna and the return of Aydar Suniev from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, adding depth to Calgary’s lineup but not enough to overcome the Avalanche’s dominance.
