Tim Nowatzke’s college football journey took an unforgettable turn when his BYU Cougars faced Notre Dame—a program he had longed to join since childhood. Growing up in Michigan City, Indiana, just 35 miles from South Bend, Nowatzke dreamed of playing for the Irish but ultimately committed to BYU in 1990 after a recruiting visit.
Fate intervened when Notre Dame became a three-time opponent on his college schedule, beginning in 1992. The first matchup in October of that year carried deep personal weight: Nowatzke’s grandfather had passed away just days before, forcing him to balance grief with the pressure of playing in Notre Dame’s stadium for the first time.
Despite emotional turmoil, he caught a pivotal 5-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, securing a 21-16 BYU victory and honoring his family’s memory on national television.
Nowatzke’s connection to Notre Dame extended beyond the field—his family attended the game, and his grandfather’s absence loomed large. The sophomore receiver later reflected on the game’s significance, describing how prayer helped him channel his emotions into performance.
His touchdown, followed by a hard tackle from Irish defenders, became a defining moment in a series that reshaped his college career and reinforced his bond with the Cougars program.
