The Calgary Flames are off to a dismal start, having dropped their first three games of the 2026-27 season while managing just three goals and a -13 goal differential. With offensive production in short supply, the team may soon turn to its minor-league prospects for a spark.
Aydar Suniev, who led the Flames in preseason scoring despite being assigned to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, has already shown flashes of offensive potential, netting three goals in two preseason games and adding another in the NextGen showcase. Though still refining his defensive play and puck retrieval, Suniev’s early-season struggles in the NHL have left an opening for him to prove his readiness at the next level.
The Flames’ recent waiver moves—including placing former first-round pick Connor Zary and defenseman Brayden Pachal on waivers—could create roster spots for young talent like Suniev or defenseman Hunter Brzustewicz, who may now have an opportunity to contribute if the offense remains stagnant.
