Steve Smith, Australia’s vice-captain, is set to undergo a second concussion assessment after a sharp blow to his helmet during the fourth day of the Durban Test. The incident occurred when Anrich Nortje’s bouncer struck Smith’s protective gear unexpectedly, leaving a visible mark on his helmet.
Though cleared to continue playing after the initial on-field evaluation, Smith did not return to the field, raising concerns that persisted into the evening. Cricket Australia guidelines mandate a minimum 24-hour stand-down for any diagnosed concussion, meaning Smith’s availability for the final day hinges on further medical scrutiny.
This is not Smith’s first such incident; he was previously ruled out of the 2019 Ashes after a similar helmet strike by Jofra Archer, though he passed the immediate concussion test at the time.
South Africa’s chase against Australia’s 421 target remains wide open, with the hosts at 102/4 at close of play. Matt Renshaw’s second-innings 82—following his 190 in the first innings—helped Australia set the ambitious total, while Josh Inglis and Cameron Green continue to monitor their own fitness for the upcoming Gqeberha Test.
Smith’s absence adds another layer of uncertainty to Australia’s bid for a series-opening victory, with the second match scheduled to begin on October 18.
