Southampton edge win at struggling Norwich

October 14, 2026

Southampton secured their second consecutive 1-0 victory in four days, extending their winning streak in the Championship with a hard-fought away win over Norwich. The Saints’ Kuryu Matsuki sealed the victory in the 54th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error and a loose ball after substitute Caspar Jander’s shot was saved by Norwich goalkeeper Dan Grimshaw.

Norwich, who had started the season with a four-point deduction, struggled to capitalize on early chances, including Oscar Schwartau’s shot that narrowly missed the target in the fourth minute. Despite a strong first half and multiple opportunities, including a late volley saved by Southampton’s Daniel Peretz, Norwich’s defensive solidity crumbled under pressure in the second half, leaving them on the wrong end of their fourth straight defeat.

Southampton, now comfortably positioned in the top half of the table after 10 games, maintained their momentum with a performance that reflected their improved form this season.

Norwich manager Philippe Clément admitted his team deserved better, praising their effort but criticizing the late substitutions and the fitness of some players returning from injury. The Canaries’ defensive organization held up early, but their inability to convert chances and the fatigue of key players proved costly.

Southampton’s resilience and clinical finishing—highlighted by Matsuki’s decisive goal—ensured they took all three points, further distancing themselves from the relegation battle while Norwich remain in a precarious position at the bottom of the table.
