A dazzling innings of 82 off 41 balls from Sanju Samson was not enough to protect India in the second T20I in Ranchi, as West Indies completed their highest T20I chase to draw level at 1-1 in the five-match series. After West Indies won the toss and chose to field on 9 October 2026, Samson, opening the batting, helped India to a formidable total of 249 for 5 in their 20 overs.
West Indies had opened with spin, getting through seven overs of spin and two of part-time seam before introducing their two main fast bowlers because of expected dew, with Roston Chase returning their best figures of 3 for 24 in four overs. Yet despite Samson's efforts, India's target was overhauled with remarkable ease.
The chase began with India striking early, but the visiting side soon dismantled the bowling attack to reach the target of 250 in just 18.3 overs, winning by six wickets with nine balls remaining. Shai Hope led the way with an unbeaten 102 off 45 balls, joined by Sherfane Rutherford, who smashed 84 off 37 deliveries.
Together, Hope and Rutherford combined for a 120-run fourth-wicket partnership that turned the contest decisively. Romario Shepherd's late hitting then carried West Indies over the finish line to complete a historic run chase.
Conceding 250 runs inside 19 overs leaves serious questions for India's attack. Mayank Yadav provided the lone sustained resistance for the hosts, taking 3 for 36. The rest of the attack could not stop Hope and Rutherford once they settled in.
Dew was expected to play a part, and it is why West Indies opened with spin.
