Sage suffers defeat to former side Lyon as Palace comeback falls short

Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage faced a tough night as his former club Lyon handed the Eagles a 3-2 Europa League defeat. The French side took control early, with Corentin Tolisso and Ernest Nuamah scoring either side of half-time to build a two-goal lead.

Palace struggled to mount a serious challenge, failing to register a single shot on target in the opening 45 minutes, though Sage’s half-time adjustments sparked a fightback. Yeremy Pino pulled one back in the 50th minute, and Daichi Kamada later cut the deficit to one with a late equalizer, but Lyon’s third goal proved decisive.

The loss adds to Palace’s frustrations, as Lyon’s ownership ties to former co-owner John Textor—who also played a key role in their Europa League exit last season—add an extra layer of context to the result. The Eagles now turn their attention to a Premier League clash with Brighton this Sunday before a challenging trip to Besiktas in their next European fixture.
