Ronaldo named in Jesus' first Portugal squad

New Portugal manager Jorge Jesus has included Cristiano Ronaldo in his initial 25-man roster, quashing thoughts that the 41-year-old attacker might conclude his international career. Following a tearful round-of-16 elimination against eventual champions Spain at the recent World Cup, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United standout had refrained from committing to his country, stating he would consult his relatives before making any composed choices.

That had triggered assumptions he might mirror longtime adversary Lionel Messi by stepping aside on the international stage. Roberto Martinez vacated the managerial post after the World Cup campaign, paving the way for Jesus, a 72-year-old tactician who previously partnered with Ronaldo at Al-Nassr to capture the Saudi Pro League crown for the first time in seven seasons.

Ronaldo, who previously stated the recent World Cup tournament would serve as his final appearance in that competition, will celebrate his 42nd birthday ahead of next summer's Nations League finale and reach age 43 by Euro 2028. The European Championship age benchmark currently stands with Pepe, Ronaldo's past international colleague, who featured at 41 years and 130 days old during Euro 2024.
