The Alabama-Georgia rivalry has often played out on neutral fields or in postseason showdowns, but when the matchup lands on one of their campuses, it’s typically a high-stakes, hard-fought battle. Over the past three decades, only five such games have taken place in Tuscaloosa, each carrying significant weight for both programs.
The most recent before this weekend was in 2002, when Georgia edged Alabama 27-25 in a chaotic affair marked by 19 combined penalties and five turnovers. Brodie Croyle led Alabama’s late charge, including a touchdown run and a pick-six, but a missed extra point and a failed two-point conversion attempt left the Crimson Tide clinging to a one-point lead—only for Georgia to capitalize on a 32-yard field goal as time expired.
Looking further back, Alabama’s 29-28 victory in 1994 stands out as a dramatic comeback. Down 28-19 in the fourth quarter, the Tide rallied behind quarterback Jay Barker, who threw a touchdown to Todrick Malone and sealed the win with a last-minute field goal by Michael Proctor.
Georgia’s Eric Zeier and Hines Ward were standouts on the other side, but Alabama’s resilience kept their perfect regular-season record intact that year.
