The Washington Commanders' offensive line has been thrown into disarray by a series of injuries and coaching decisions ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the New York Giants. The absence of starting right guard Sam Cosmi, sidelined by a concussion, forced a reshuffling of the unit, with Nick Allegretti moving to replace him while rookie Lucas Patrick took over at center.
Allegretti’s performance at right guard was short-lived, however, as he was benched in favor of Matt Gulbin after struggling with a hip injury. Meanwhile, Patrick has shown promise in his limited time, posting a pass-protection pressure rate of just 2.7%, significantly better than Allegretti’s 7.8% mark.
Cosmi’s return to practice in a noncontact jersey adds another layer of uncertainty, as the team must now decide whether to stick with Patrick at center or revert to Allegretti or Gulbin, despite Gulbin’s underwhelming performance last week. The Commanders’ injury woes extend beyond the offensive line, with 11 players listed as limited and six others not participating in Wednesday’s practice, further complicating an already challenging season for a team still adjusting to new coordinators.
