The Tampa Bay Rays completed an unprecedented sweep of the New York Yankees in the AL Division Series, securing a 4-3 victory in Game 3 at Yankee Stadium. This marked the franchise’s first sweep in postseason history and only the second time the Yankees have been swept in a best-of-five series since the 1980 ALCS.
The Rays, who entered the season as underdogs, have now advanced to the AL Championship Series with momentum, having already clinched their first AL East title in five years. Their pitching staff dominated once again, with Nick Martinez and Ian Seymour leading the way, while relief pitchers Griffin Jax, Cam Booser, Kevin Kelly, and Bryan Baker locked down the late innings.
Offensively, Ryan Vilade and Victor Mesa Jr. delivered clutch hits, including Vilade’s postseason-debut home run and Mesa Jr.’s game-tying two-run shot in the sixth inning.
With three wins in hand, the Rays now prepare to face the winner of the Guardians-White Sox series in the ALCS, starting Monday at Tropicana Field.
