The Baltimore Ravens made a roster move Tuesday by releasing veteran wide receiver Chris Moore, clearing a path for the potential return of third-round rookie Ja’Kobi Lane from injured reserve. Lane, who fractured his wrist in Week 1 and had surgery shortly afterward, is eligible to return to practice Wednesday.
Head coach Jesse Minter has praised Lane’s physical preparation during his recovery, calling his conditioning progress strong. Moore, a 2017 fourth-round draft pick who rejoined the Ravens in July, appeared in four of the team’s first five games, primarily as a blocker, while also contributing with a 53-yard catch and a four-yard touchdown.
His release also allowed the Ravens to re-sign Moore to their practice squad, where he still has two game-day elevations remaining.
The Ravens’ receiving corps has remained productive without Lane, with Zay Flowers leading the NFL in efficiency and Rashod Bateman gaining 233 yards in the last four games. However, Lane’s size and athleticism could address current tight end struggles, as Durham Smythe is out for the season and Mark Andrews has shown inconsistency.
Lane’s return could also bolster Baltimore’s goal-to-go efforts, given his standout performance in training camp and his potential as a big-slot receiver in the middle of the field.
