Pinto scores the shootout winner to send the Senators to a 2-1 victory over the Islanders

October 16, 2026

The Ottawa Senators secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders in a shootout-decided game on Thursday night. Shane Pinto delivered the decisive goal in the shootout, capping off a resilient performance that included a late second-period equalizer by Ridly Greig.

Ottawa’s Linus Ullmark was stellar in net, making 20 saves and continuing his perfect start to the season with six consecutive wins. The Islanders, meanwhile, saw Semyon Varlamov return to the lineup for his second start, stopping 18 shots despite falling short in regulation and the shootout.

The game featured notable absences for Ottawa, including defenseman William Eklund, who underwent ankle surgery and is expected to miss 10 to 12 weeks, and Artem Zub, who made his season debut after recovering from a playoff knee injury last year. New York’s Matias Macelli opened the scoring late in the first period, but two Ottawa goals were initially called back due to review—one for a missed crossbar and another for offside.

The Senators’ power play saw limited impact, with Bo Horvat taking the lone shot after penalties by Adam Pelech and Dylan Cozens extended the game into overtime.
