Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding has revealed that uncertainty over quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’ eligibility for the 2026 season was the primary reason for the departures of Austin Simmons and Cayden Lee, two key players who transferred to Missouri this offseason. Simmons, a four-star recruit who redshirted in 2023 before serving as backup in 2024 and starter for two games in 2025, left after Chambliss’ strong performance in relief solidified his position.
Lee, a three-star wide receiver who recorded 1,623 receiving yards and seven touchdowns over two seasons, also opted out, citing the lack of clarity on the quarterback situation as a deciding factor. Both players joined Missouri alongside cornerback Chris Graves Jr., marking a significant loss for Ole Miss as they prepare for the 2026 campaign.
The departures come amid Ole Miss’ shifting quarterback landscape, with Simmons’ injury in Week 2 of the 2025 season accelerating Chambliss’ rise. The legal battle over Chambliss’ medical redshirt from his Ferris State days added further instability, leaving Simmons and Lee with no guarantee of playing time.
Their transfers to Missouri, a program now bolstered by former Rebels, underscore the ripple effects of eligibility disputes on college football’s transfer portal.
