Penn State’s Week 6 performance against USC offered a mixed bag of progress and frustration, with quarterback Rocco Becht finally showing flashes of the play that had been missing in his first two Big Ten starts. After struggling through two consecutive games with Wisconsin and Northwestern—posting a combined 54.3% completion rate and three interceptions—Becht turned in his best outing of the season, completing 80% of his passes in the first half and throwing for 175 yards, including a touchdown and three deep strikes of 15+ yards.
While his second-half performance dipped, finishing 21-for-32 for 289 yards and a single touchdown, the improvement was undeniable, even if it wasn’t enough to overcome a 31-23 loss in a game that saw Penn State lead briefly on a Ryan Barker field goal before USC rallied back. The Nittany Lions’ offensive line and secondary were exposed late, but Becht’s emergence—particularly his ability to stretch the field—gave fans reason for cautious optimism ahead of their upcoming matchup with Michigan this weekend.
The receiving corps also showed signs of life, with Chase Sowell and Brett Eskildsen finally combining for a strong outing in the same game. Sowell, who has now recorded at least 65 receiving yards in three straight weeks, delivered two explosive plays of 47 and 37 yards, both setting up touchdowns and marking the first true downfield threats Penn State has had since Koby Howard’s injury after Week 3.
Eskildsen contributed with four receptions for 70 yards, including two critical third-down catches and three first-down conversions, though he also accounted for the game’s lone turnover with a fourth-quarter interception. Despite the setback, their combined efforts provided a much-needed spark in a Penn State offense that had been stagnant for much of the season.
Head coach Matt Campbell, however, saw his stock take a hit after the loss, with the team’s inability to sustain momentum and close out games becoming a growing concern.
