The Buffalo Sabres turned a two-goal deficit into victory with a dramatic overtime win over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. Owen Power sealed the 3-2 triumph with a fourth-minute OT goal, capping a late rally after Tage Thompson and Noah Ostlund had tied the game just six minutes apart in the third period.
Colten Ellis, Buffalo’s third-string goaltender, made his season debut and stopped 18 shots, including three in overtime, as the Sabres claimed their second straight win despite trailing entering the final period. Minnesota, meanwhile, missed a chance to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2021-22 after Thompson’s milestone 400th career point with Buffalo also proved pivotal.
The Wild had led late in the second period on goals by Danila Yurov and Maxim Shabanov, but the Sabres’ resilience extended their recent momentum, overcoming a similar deficit in their season opener against Chicago just days earlier.
Elsewhere, Dylan Larkin scored his first goal since requesting a trade, leading Detroit to a 5-3 win over Ottawa. Despite initial boos from the home crowd, Larkin’s 13th-minute tally sparked a Detroit comeback, with Alex DeBrincat adding two goals and Justin Faulk and Viktor Arvidsson contributing as well.
John Gibson turned aside 22 shots for the Red Wings, while Ottawa’s Samuel Ersson made 31 saves in a loss that snapped their two-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Utah Mammoth defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-3, with Nick Schmaltz scoring his NHL-best fifth goal of the season and the Mammoth’s power play proving decisive.
