Legendary Alabama football coach Nick Saban, who led the Crimson Tide to six national championships over 17 seasons, revealed in ESPN’s new docuseries *Saban* that he doesn’t know the meaning behind the program’s iconic chant, *Roll Tide*. The admission came during an interview with director Russell Dinallo, who conducted seven separate sessions with Saban and featured over 70 on-camera participants, including former players like Tim Tebow, Jalen Hurts, and Tua Tagovailoa, as well as coaching peers like Bill Belichick and Lane Kiffin.
The six-part series premiered on ESPN and Disney+ in October, offering an intimate look at Saban’s career and his efforts to clarify misconceptions about his legacy. Despite Alabama’s deep ties to the phrase—often linked to the team’s mud-stained jerseys in a 1907 game or its fight song—the university itself can’t confirm its origins, adding to the mystery.
Saban and his wife attended the premiere in Tuscaloosa, where he framed the project as an opportunity to present an unfiltered account of his time in college football.
