New Mexico is currently boasting the top-ranked scoring defense in the country, conceding only 10.5 points per game over their first six matchups. This performance is among the elite of the 21st century, with only nine FBS teams since 2000 having a better full-season average, including the 2011 Alabama squad that allowed just 8.2 points.
The 5-1 Lobos, whose sole defeat was a 14-6 loss to Oklahoma, are now eyeing a Group of Six spot in the College Football Playoff as they prepare to face North Dakota State at home.
Defensive coordinator Spence Nowinski, a former Broyles Award nominee, and head coach Jason Eck, a previous Mountain West Coach of the Year, lead the unit. The defense ranks third nationally in tackles for loss at 9.0 per game and sixth in yards allowed at 262.7 per game, having held three opponents to single digits and all opponents under 20 points, with 18 being the most allowed.
Key contributors include Mercury Swaim with 32 tackles, Jaxton Eck with 25 stops, Tavian Combs with four interceptions, and Austin Brawley with two. Darren Agu, the current Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, has recorded four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss.
Oklahoma coach Brent Venables praised the same aggressive confidence of the Lobos, noting that Jason Eck has developed a program with high-quality players. The team's biggest upcoming test will be their November 27 game against Air Force, who rank second in the nation in rushing yards at 343 per game.
