Ravichandran Ashwin recently spoke on his YouTube channel regarding Chennai Super Kings and their upcoming campaign, expressing his expectation that MS Dhoni will transition into a mentorship role for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. Ashwin pointed out that the franchise has struggled significantly in recent years, missing the playoffs in three consecutive campaigns, which culminated in an eighth-place finish after securing only six victories across fourteen matches in 2026 following a last-place finish the previous year.
The organization notably severed ties with long-time head coach Stephen Fleming, whom Ashwin believes had successfully tailored his methods to mesh with Dhoni during their tenure together. In place of Fleming, the team appointed Zaheer Khan as head coach and brought on Mohit Sharma as bowling coach, leading Ashwin to ponder how skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad will navigate his leadership duties alongside both Zaheer and Dhoni.
Meanwhile, Dhoni's playing status for the next season remains unconfirmed after physical setbacks sidelined him for the entire 2026 schedule, though his extensive career numbers include 5,439 runs across 278 matches.
