Michigan tight end Zack Marshall has publicly apologized for a series of leaked text messages that criticized the Wolverines' offensive system and his own role within it, following the team's 3–2 start to the season, including back-to-back Big Ten losses. The messages, sent after Saturday’s 14-point defeat to Minnesota, reportedly included claims that offensive coordinator Jason Beck had told the tight ends they were not valuable to the offense—a stark contrast to Marshall’s 2023 performance, when he recorded 16 receptions for 199 yards and a touchdown.
This season, however, Michigan’s offense has heavily favored wide receivers, with only nine of 69 completed passes targeted to tight ends, leaving Marshall without a single catch so far. The incident has drawn attention amid broader struggles under first-year head coach Kyle Whittingham, whose offense has managed just 19 or 14 points in each of the last two games, both losses, while failing to execute on key areas like ball control, third-down conversion, and quarterback protection.
