Manchester United’s winless streak stretched to six games after a 1-1 draw at Leeds United, their worst such run since the 2018-19 season under Ole Gunnar Solskjær. Bryan Mbeumo provided the only bright spot with his fourth Premier League goal in seven appearances, the only player besides Bruno Fernandes to score more than once for Michael Carrick’s side.
The draw, however, did little to ease concerns about United’s defensive frailties or tactical direction, as Lisandro Martínez’s pre-match criticism of the club’s recruitment strategy resurfaced amid persistent squad instability. With Luke Shaw sidelined and Diogo Dalot now the fifth different player at left-back this season, Carrick’s lack of options was laid bare, while Martínez’s injury forced another untested call-up in Noussair Mazraoui over Matthijs de Ligt.
Despite the setback, Carrick framed the result as a chance to reset, though United’s 13th-place table position leaves little room for optimism before the next Champions League trip to Como.
The draw also highlighted deeper tensions within the club, with Martínez’s public spat with sporting director Jason Wilcox overshadowing the match. Carrick, meanwhile, avoided the explosive fallout that saw Ruben Amorim dismissed after last season’s clash, instead focusing on internal adjustments.
Yet with no clear path to victory and mounting pressure on the backline, United’s struggles extend beyond results—questioning whether the squad can break its losing streak or even stabilize its core positions.
