LSU head coach Lane Kiffin has strongly criticized a potential SEC rule that would require transferring players to sit out a season before joining another conference school, warning it could push talent out of the league entirely. Kiffin argued the policy would force athletes to leave the SEC for other conferences, comparing it to an NFL scenario where AFC free agents couldn’t sign with other AFC teams—effectively handing SEC players to rival leagues.
The proposal comes as the SEC explores self-governance amid NCAA rule enforcement challenges, with commissioner Greg Sankey acknowledging the league’s need for independent oversight in July.
Kiffin’s stance holds significant weight given LSU’s recent reliance on transfer portal additions, including SEC defectors like edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen (Ole Miss), linebacker TJ Dottery (Ole Miss), and wide receiver Winston Watkins (Ole Miss). Other key transfers contributing to the Tigers came from Florida (Eugene Wilson), Tennessee (Jordan Ross, William Satterwhite), and Auburn (Malik Blocton), alongside Arkansas transfer kicker Scott Starzyk.
Under the proposed rule, such moves between SEC schools could become far more difficult, reshaping how programs build rosters through the portal.
