The New York Liberty’s championship aspirations ended abruptly Friday night as they were swept in the WNBA semifinals, bowing out in Game 3 with an 85-83 loss to the Atlanta Dream. The defeat capped a season marked by inconsistency, as injuries to key players like Sabrina Ionescu and Satou Sabally, along with the departure of Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, disrupted the team’s momentum.
Despite a strong 26-18 regular-season record, the Liberty struggled in the postseason, finishing 2-3 and falling short of their goal of returning to the top of the league. Breanna Stewart, a cornerstone of the franchise, acknowledged the team’s lack of consistency, noting they failed to sustain their performance throughout the season and playoffs.
The loss also marked the second straight year the Liberty have fallen short of a title run, leaving questions about the future of head coach Chris DeMarco, who has committed to returning in 2027. The Dream, featuring standout players like Angel Reese and Rhyne Howard, now advance to the Finals, where they will face the Connecticut Sun, another team the Liberty struggled against during the regular season.
