The Baltimore Orioles’ 2026 season has been defined by unexpected developments, some good and some bad. One of the more surprising trends was the increased role of Leody Taveras, a veteran outfielder signed to a modest one-year, $2 million deal after a dismal 2025 campaign.
Once a top prospect for the Texas Rangers, Taveras struggled mightily last year, batting just .205 across 58 games and getting released by both the Rangers and Seattle Mariners. His signing by the Orioles was a low-risk move, given his past struggles, but the team’s early-season injuries created an opportunity for him to step in as a regular starter.
Taveras initially thrived after Tyler O’Neill’s concussion-related absence opened up a center-field spot, posting a .288/.397/.455 line by late April. However, his production faded sharply after that stretch, with his on-base plus slugging (OPS) dropping to .630 by early June.
Despite the decline, Taveras remained a key part of the Orioles’ outfield rotation, playing a major role in a season marked by frequent lineup shifts and defensive realignments among the team’s younger outfielders, including Colton Cowser and Dylan Beavers.
