Joe Root scripts history with 8,000 ODI runs, joins elite international club

Joe Root has etched his name into the record books by becoming the first English cricketer to surpass 8,000 runs in the ODI format. He achieved this feat during his 197th appearance in the game, reaching the milestone against Sri Lanka with a shot off Dunith Wellalage.

Beyond his ODI success, Root has also eclipsed 23,000 total international runs across all formats, placing him alongside legendary figures like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Ricky Ponting. He remains the only England player to reach this combined career total.

During the match, Root contributed 69 runs before being dismissed by Asitha Fernando.
