Buffalo Bills head coach Joe Brady admitted Tuesday he should have opted for two kneel downs instead of attempting a 45-yard game-winning field goal in overtime during Week 5. The decision came on second down with just two minutes remaining, after the Bills had already secured the lead.
Brady revealed in a postgame press conference that he weighed the risk of missing the kick and potentially handing the Rams extra time to mount a comeback. The Rams would have had nearly 40 seconds more to respond if the kick had fallen short, compared to the roughly 20 seconds they’d face from a 47-yard attempt.
Though Bills kicker Tyler Bass made the kick, Brady now believes taking two knees would have been the smarter play, especially given the team’s recent struggles with extra-point attempts. The conversation in the huddle leaned toward winning immediately, but Brady acknowledged the clock-management misstep in hindsight, particularly since the distance was already a long shot.
