Indiana Hoosiers head coach Curt Cignetti has openly acknowledged the monumental challenge of containing Ohio State Buckeyes star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith in Saturday’s high-stakes top-five showdown. Smith’s dominance this season—averaging over 150 receiving yards in four of his last six games and posting back-to-back 200-yard performances—has left opposing defenses scrambling, with even double and triple coverage failing to slow him down.
His latest outings include a 12-catch, 217-yard, four-touchdown explosion against Illinois and an 11-catch, 206-yard haul with two touchdowns against Iowa, underscoring his lethal combination of speed and route-running. Cignetti, who has faced Smith twice before (holding him to just three catches in 2024 and limiting him to eight for 144 yards last year in the Big Ten Championship), admitted the task may be insurmountable this time.
“We can’t play with 12 or 13, so we’re up the creek,” he remarked, echoing Ohio State coach Ryan Day’s earlier assessment that Smith is nearly unstoppable in any coverage scheme. With the Buckeyes arriving in Bloomington for a 12 p.m.
ET kickoff, Indiana’s defensive scheme will be put to the test against one of college football’s most feared playmakers.
