Indiana blew it against Ohio State. That’s exactly why I’m buying Curt Cignetti | Opinion

Indiana’s historic 22-game winning streak ended in dramatic fashion with a 19–15 loss to Ohio State in what was supposed to be a statement home game. The Hoosiers, who had dominated opponents with a stifling defense akin to Georgia’s 2021–22 unit, were unable to capitalize on a late opportunity when a potential game-sealing throw fell incomplete in the end zone.

Instead, Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith broke free on a double-team blitz, hauling in a 50-yard touchdown to seal the upset in front of a packed crowd at Indiana’s biggest home game in program history. The loss also marked the first defeat for the Hoosiers since the start of the 2024 season, leaving head coach Curt Cignetti visibly shaken and struggling to articulate his thoughts afterward.

Despite the setback, Indiana’s defensive pressure—led by standout pass rushers like Mario Landino, Tyrique Tucker, and Kellan Wyatt—forced Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin into two of his worst games as a starter, including a fourth-quarter exit due to an apparent injury after a hard hit from Landino. The Buckeyes’ offense, usually a juggernaut, was reduced to using Smith primarily as a decoy, a rare sight given his star power, while Indiana’s defense held firm outside of that single costly play.

The defeat underscores the volatility of college football’s top tier, where even the most dominant teams can unravel in an instant. Indiana’s offense, which had thrived under Cignetti’s system, was exposed by turnovers and missed opportunities, including a botched field goal attempt and a series of penalties that cost critical yardage.

Yet, the Hoosiers’ defensive identity—built on relentless pass rushing and disciplined coverage—remained intact, a testament to their ability to disrupt even elite offenses. For a program that had redefined itself under Cignetti, the loss serves as a stark reminder that consistency in the College Football Playoff era is as valuable as dominance.

With Michigan looming next, Indiana’s resilience will be tested again, but the foundation of their defense remains a weapon few teams can neutralize.
