The five-match T20I series between India and West Indies sits level at 1-1 after the visitors secured a six-wicket win in Ranchi on 9 October 2026, following India's eight-wicket victory in the opening match in Lucknow. In Ranchi, India fielded Sanju Samson alongside Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was left out of the team.
Samson's recent form had drawn scrutiny in pre-series previews, and he did not make an impact with the bat in Lucknow. However, he followed a prior knock of 57 off 22 balls against Afghanistan by scoring 82 off 41 deliveries in Ranchi, helping India reach 249/5 in a losing cause.
Samson's innings in Ranchi has placed further attention on the competition for India's opening berths. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi remains on the bench despite entering the series after winning the Orange Cap at IPL 2026 with 776 runs.
Regarding Sooryavanshi's inclusion, India's team management has repeatedly stated that the batter will have to be patient. Reports indicate that head coach Gautam Gambhir is unlikely to fit both Samson and Sooryavanshi into the same XI if Abhishek Sharma retains his spot at the top of the order.
Different solutions have been raised regarding how to balance the three top-order options. Former wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta suggested trying an opening partnership of Samson and Sooryavanshi without dropping Abhishek Sharma from the wider setup.
For his part, Samson has addressed the public focus on the selection contest, stating that the rivalry exists mainly outside the dressing room and that the players view each other as teammates. With the series tied after two matches, the selection setup at the top of the innings remains a focal point as the series progresses.
