The upcoming cricket series between India and New Zealand will introduce a new audio-based edge-detection tool known as Sonic. Developed by the firm Virtual Eye, this system aims to assist third umpires in verifying contact between bat and ball during reviews.
The implementation follows a rigorous period of independent evaluation and validation involving both the ICC and BCCI. While currently approved for this specific tour, future usage of the technology will depend on ongoing accreditation standards.
This addition allows Virtual Eye to provide a complete package of DRS services, building on their long-standing role in ball-tracking since 2008. The series is scheduled to commence with the opening T20I match.
