Illinois looks to regroup amid injuries, defensive changes ahead of Michigan State

The Illinois Fighting Illini enter a critical stretch of their season after a shaky 2-3 start, facing Michigan State with a roster still recovering from key injuries and a defensive overhaul in progress. Head coach Bret Bielema has maintained confidence in his long-term approach despite the struggles, though the team’s recent performance—including a loss to Purdue, a program that had not won a Big Ten game since 2023—has raised questions about execution.

Defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck’s abrupt departure after just four games left the unit in flux, with defensive line coach Roger Cooper stepping in to improve communication and reduce costly turnovers. Bielema cited a nearly 50% drop in “don’t beat ourselves” plays as a sign of progress, though the defense’s overall impact remains underwhelming.

With two narrow losses and inconsistent play across all phases, Illinois now looks to regroup before a pivotal matchup against a resurgent Michigan State squad.
