Akash Deep returned to competitive cricket after a seven-month hiatus caused by a lower back injury, making his mark in the Irani Cup 2026 with six wickets for Rest of India against the same opposition. The 29-year-old fast bowler, who previously played in the Bengal-Jammu & Kashmir Ranji Trophy semifinal in February, credited the enforced break for allowing him to refine his physical preparation and mental approach.
Speaking after his strong performance, Deep emphasized the rarity of having dedicated time to focus on his body as a fast bowler, noting his ability to maintain pace and rhythm akin to his form from four to five years ago. He also revealed adopting self-preservation techniques similar to former India captain Kapil Dev, using his non-bowling hand to shine the ball when needed.
With the Bengal Ranji Trophy opener against Delhi on the horizon, Deep expressed confidence in his readiness, while keeping his sights on potential future assignments, including a possible call-up to the India A side for their tour of New Zealand.
