Auburn’s football program, which had been stuck in a 21-year winless drought between the hedges and endured five straight losing seasons, finally broke through with a stunning upset over No. 1 Georgia on Saturday night.
The Tigers, led by head coach Alex Golesh, defeated the heavily favored Bulldogs 27-24 in a game that saw Auburn overcome a 14-0 deficit with a relentless 24-point scoring surge. Quarterback Byrum Brown rushed for 115 yards on 26 carries, while the defense forced three turnovers, including a critical Gunner Stockton fumble with 58 seconds left that set up Alex McPherson’s game-winning 34-yard field goal.
Georgia, which entered the game favored by nearly three touchdowns, suffered its second-largest upset of Kirby Smart’s career, marking the first time in 36 years the Bulldogs lost back-to-back games to Alabama and Georgia on the same day. Golesh emphasized the mental and physical strain of SEC play, noting the Tigers’ ability to focus on one play at a time in high-pressure situations.
The victory reignited Auburn’s long-lost championship aspirations after years of unfulfilled promises from previous coaching staffs.
