England seized command of the third Test at Edgbaston on an eventful opening day that saw 14 wickets tumble. The hosts' bowling attack dictated terms, with Josh Tongue claiming four dismissals while Ollie Robinson and Jofra Archer chipped in with three apiece to dismantle Pakistan. The visitors had overhauled their squad prior to the match by cutting seven members, drafting in seven replacements, and altering their starting lineup with four personnel swaps.

Despite their struggles, Pakistan found a bright spot in 21-year-old debutant Razaullah, who generated speeds of 92mph with a slinging, front-on delivery style reminiscent of Waqar Younis. The newcomer struck early in his international career by removing Joe Root with only his fourth ball, finishing his day with figures of 2-42 to provide a lone highlight for his team following the tea interval.
