Marcus Davenport, the Bears' veteran pass rusher and former first-round draft pick, has announced his retirement after just 12 snaps in his first NFL game of the season. The 30-year-old played Sunday against the Jets, contributing one tackle in limited action before requesting his release from the team.
Davenport’s career, which began with the New Orleans Saints in 2018 as the 14th overall pick, has been overshadowed by injuries, including a torn triceps and multiple missed games across his nine-season tenure. Despite flashes of potential—such as a six-sack season in 2021—he struggled to stay healthy, missing 18 games in five years with the Saints alone before stints with the Vikings and Lions further compounded his injury woes.
Chicago signed Davenport in August, reactivating him from the practice squad for Sunday’s win over the Jets, but his brief return proved to be his final chapter in the league.
