Auburn football’s defensive anchor, linebacker Xavier Atkins, has been dismissed from the program following a disciplinary suspension that kept him off the field during the Tigers’ upset victory over No. 1 Georgia.
The suspension, stemming from an off-field incident, has now led to Atkins’ removal from the team, with coach Alex Golesh confirming his departure. With Atkins no longer on the roster, Auburn’s defense will face a significant challenge in Saturday’s crucial SEC matchup against LSU, relying on depth players like Elijah Melendez and De’Marcus Riddick to fill the void.
Atkins, a standout performer entering the season, announced his intention to enter the transfer portal, marking the end of his tenure with the Tigers after just six games. Golesh, who led Auburn to its first win over Georgia since 1942, has yet to provide an update on whether Atkins will be eligible for any future contests, leaving the team’s defensive plans in flux ahead of the LSU showdown.
