The Washington Nationals’ 2026 pitching staff was a revolving door, with 41 different arms taking the mound over the season—a sharp increase from the 29 pitchers used in 2025. Among the most overlooked relievers were a pair of short-lived bullpen additions whose struggles stood out early.
Ken Waldichuk, a 28-year-old left-hander, made the Opening Day roster but lasted just five appearances before tearing his UCL and requiring Tommy John surgery. In those outings, he posted a 6.75 ERA over 9.1 innings, allowing runs in four of his five starts while battling control issues.
Meanwhile, Andre Granillo, acquired midseason in a minor trade from the Cardinals, failed to replicate his 2025 rookie success. After dominating at Triple-A and showing promise in his debut season, Granillo’s slider lost its effectiveness, and he posted a dismal 9.64 ERA in eight appearances, walking eight batters while striking out just three.
His worst outing was so poor that a win was retroactively stripped from him—a rare move even in a season where the Nationals’ bullpen churned through arms at an unprecedented rate.
